Mexcio: America's Team

Our patriotic duty clearly is to support our neighbors and fellow Norte Americanos in the World Cup.

Why Guardian US is supporting Mexico, North America's team, at the World Cup
As kick-off approaches for Russia 2018, only one team is the logical choice for Americans to cheer

As the World Cup kicks off this week without the US men’s national team, American fans are choosing who to put their support behind. Will it be the world champions Germany, the jogo bonito of Brazil, Lionel Messi’s Argentina or rank outsiders like Panama, Saudi Arabia and England?

Here at Guardian US we have decided to back Mexico. El Tri have already made the US a second home: just over half of their international matches since 2007 have been played in the US, across 22 metropolitan areas. Then there’s the shared football history between the two countries, from thrilling World Cup qualifiers to Mexicans who have lit up Major League Soccer and Americans who have made the journey to star in Liga MX. And, of course, Mexico and the US, along with Canada, will co-host the 2026 World Cup.

And then there’s the political climate we are living in. As presidential policy creates rifts between the US and Mexico now is an excellent time, to use an old cliche, for sport to bring the countries closer together.

Well here's one for our Amigo hating Trumpster supporters to get behind team Mexico.

Yahoo reporters are calling for Mexico to be severely sanctioned and even expelled from the tournament because during Mexico's win over Germany the Mexican fans were chanting "Puto!" at the German goalie during a penalty kick.

This...is beyond silly. There are very serious issues for the LGBT community that need public attention and support....this is definately not one of them and it trivializes those important issue. The LGBT community should tell those Puto reporters to have a coke and a smile and to shut the (expletive deleted) up.

My patriotic duty in the face of herds of deplorable Kremlin-stooge Trumpists, is to support teams in this priority order:

1. Mexico
2. Muslim-majority countries (aka, Iran, Egypt)
3. Teams from "shit hole" countries (aka, Nigeria, Senegal)

Argentina lost to Croatia today, Croatia looks pretty good.

What happened to the erstwhile football powerhouse Argentina?

Normally, I have to favor our western hemisphere neighbors in the face of European football hegemony, but here - in a case of pan-Slavic unity - I am going to have to place my chips on Croatia.

My theory is that they are playing their asses off for the children languishing in Trump's cages.

Mexico wins again, Germany hangs on

The momentum is with Mexico, which rolled to another victory, while defending champ Germany needed every second to win.

Mexico stunned defending champ Germany last week and continued its 2018 World Cup reign on Saturday, beating South Korea 2-1 in a game that sent social media into overdrive. Mexican star Javier "Chicharito" Hernández scored his 50th international goal in the victory, becoming the first Mexican player to do so, and the third Mexican player to score in three different World Cups.

They just look flat, not sure why.

I’ve watched US vs. Mexico at Crew stadium several times. They always play in February for some reason which means team USA goes to Aztecs stadium and die in the heat and altitude and the poor Amigos come up here and freeze their asses off.

Sweden grossly failed the world in humiliating fashion. All first born Swedes should be summarily executed and the rest castrated and all their women and children sold into slavery in a Muslim country to be trained as suicide bombers.

Is that to harsh for losing as they did to Germany?

Not harsh at all. I think the footballers of the Aryan master race need to be stopped....at all costs!!

I am hoping one of Trump's "shit hole" countries are up to the task. Go Nigeria! Go Senegal!

Holy Shit. I thought it was all over for El Tri! I assumed Germany would trounce South Korea. But Germany flamed out! Mexico advances though the Swedes win the group. For the first time in WC history Germany didn't make it out of group play!!!

And some say there is no God!

It's good times, man!

I was having trouble keeping a stiff upper lip after Mexico's mediocre performance against the Swedes. But humanity owes the Koreans a debt of gratitude!

Mexico had no defense today. Let’s hope they take this second chance to the net.

I am defecting from Mexico given their ignominious exit, seeking asylum in Russia, and re-directing my support to Slavic brothers
Russia Relaxes, for a Moment, to Let Soccer Fans Rejoice

MOSCOW — Under normal circumstances, a single Muscovite can hold a sign on a sidewalk without a parade permit. But if another person turns up, it becomes an illegal gathering and the police can make arrests.

But after Russia’s win over Spain, a soccer superpower, on Sunday, hundreds of Russians held a raucous, boozy, late-night party not just on any sidewalk, but the sidewalk outside Lubyanka, the headquarters of the Federal Security Service, the successor agency to the K.G.B.

One man beat out a rhythm on a drum. Soccer fans danced. “During the championship, everything is allowed,” said Sofia Mirnaya, 26, a Russian literature teacher who snapped pictures of her boyfriend holding a plastic cup of beer. Defying expectations, geopolitical tensions and a thousand grim years of Russian history, the government has turned the World Cup into an event that is, well, fun.

Human rights critics fear the sports event will strengthen the hand of President Vladimir V. Putin, who has made good use of the tournament to smooth over an unpopular pension reform at home and burnish Russia’s image abroad, and bolster his authoritarian, conservative and nationalist approach to governing.

On Monday, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, compared the celebratory crowds to those seen in “historical footage of May 9, 1945,” the date of Nazi Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union in World War II.

I’m switching to Uruguay and Brazil. Brazil for the obvious reason. They have the hottest cheerleaders.
