Minority rule brought us Trump, and worse

The tyranny of the majority isn’t a problem in America today. Tyranny of the minority is.

Jeffrey Rosen, the CEO of the National Constitution Center and a former legal columnist at the New Republic, thinks America has given in to mob rule. We’ve betrayed the legacy of James Madison, Rosen writes, who “built into the Constitution a series of cooling mechanisms intended to inhibit the formulation of passionate factions, to ensure that reasonable majorities would prevail.”

The US Senate is, by design, a grotesquely unrepresentative body that amplifies the power of small states at the expense of voters in big states. And given how America’s political geography has developed in the past two centuries, it’s now a body in which white rural interests are privileged over those of black and Latino city dwellers, given how much whiter the median state is than the median American voter:

And then there’s the Supreme Court. These past few years, the Court has been dominated by a Republican-appointed majority that has issued rulings that happen to strengthen Republicans’ anti-majoritarian hold on power.

...we have a president who lost the popular vote, the second time that has happened in the past five elections; a House districted in such a way that even a large, 5-point victory by Democrats in the popular vote in November wouldn’t give them a majority of seats; a Senate elected by a skewed, unusually white cross-section of America, where the median Senate seat is substantially more conservative than the median American voter; and a Supreme Court that is dismantling one party’s political economic base and helping preserve, even strengthen, the other party’s anti-majoritarian hold on power.

So on the one hand, we have a president who lost the popular vote, the second time that has happened in the past five elections; a House districted in such a way that even a large, 5-point victory by Democrats in the popular vote in November wouldn’t give them a majority of seats; a Senate elected by a skewed, unusually white cross-section of America, where the median Senate seat is substantially more conservative than the median American voter; and a Supreme Court that is dismantling one party’s political economic base and helping preserve, even strengthen, the other party’s anti-majoritarian hold on power.

Oh I agree that tyranny of the minority is a problem in the US, but it's not coming from the right. It's coming from the left and its attempts to pander to every minority group.

Granted, this is a problem that happens in every Western country. Non-Western societies don't engage in this, because they realize that majority privilege is the way society is supposed to operate.

Republicans’ naked power grab will unwind the legal framework of the majority — and replace it with minority rule

So what is really going on? Republicans recognize that their program is increasingly unpopular, and the only way they can protect it is by packing the courts. By holding the seat open in 2016, McConnell could motivate Republican voters to show up for Trump even if they weren’t thrilled with his candidacy.

Both of the last two Republican presidents—Bush and Trump– have lost the popular vote, and yet each nominated two Supreme Court justices, who have been confirmed by the votes of senators who represent a minority of the American people. The confirmation of a fifth justice in this way will create a solid majority on the court, which can then unwind the legal framework that a majority of Americans still supports.

In other words...this is pure unadulterated bull-shit! I'm all for splitting the USA because the minority is taking us backwards and there might be no other way to get rid of the albatross around the neck of progress. The establishment Dems are not getting the job done as they have become Republican-lite and to a great degree complicate...

Chris Hedges: 'I Won't Vote For Biden. He Helped Vomit Up Trump'

I agree with Chris Hedges but I will vote for Biden to just to get rid of Trump and then I will join forces with all other Progressives to break free of the corporate-owned Dems.

Uh, sorry, but Trumpers are in the minority.

What we have is a President that won the 2016 election just like every other President, except Jefferson - 1800 and JQA - 1824, has done since G. Washington won his first term.

BTW, is you want to use the "Hillary won the popular vote" nonsense, you idiots tend to forget that she didn't win a majority of those either. More voted against her than for her.

For you idiots that continue to say "Hillary won the popular vote", that is a lie. She didn't win it either. Less than 50% of the votes cast were for someone other than her. In other words, she didn't a majority.

Creating a system where people that refuse to work get paid more than they could make working based on their low level skill set isn't progress.

Creating a system where one group gets something they didn't earn while others you jealous pussies think have too much are forced to pay for it isn't progress.

Reading into the Constitution what you want it to say rather than going by what it actually says isn't progress.

Something the lefties that claim "Hillary won the popular vote" forget, or ignore, is that she didn't win a majority of those votes, either. For some reason they believe Trump not getting a majority of popular votes, although he won a majority of what is required by the Constitution to get elected, is tyranny of the minority but Hillary not getting a majority of electoral votes and less than a majority of the popular votes is the will of the people.

The "right" is every bit as much of the problem as the "left" if not more.

They wouldn't be if it weren't for decades of leftist propaganda. White guilt is not the natural state of white culture. White American culture would be more like how Eastern European white culture is today if having pride in white culture wasn't shamed here.

Nationalism is the norm in most of the world. The West just demonizes it in most of its countries.

thankfully we have come to the end white Christian America :)

Racial guilt isn't going to work on Latinos the same way that the left pushes it on whites. Given current trends, Latinos will be the majority eventually, and a large portion of them are Christian, or more specifically Catholic. Many of them lean conservative on social issues as well.

Jews will continue to be minorities, as will blacks.

Here's something you need to understand. Racial "pride" is only justifiable when your race has been shamed. Black pride is in reaction to centuries of black shaming. Whites haven't spent decades existing as second-class citizens or being shamed for their race.

Make sense yet?
