Birriel had worked for Miami-Dade Public Schools for 13 years and had no prior history in his personnel file, Miami-Dade Schools said. He did not have any disciplinary actions on his teaching license, according to Florida Department of Education records.

The police investigation into Birriel began on March 30, 2020, when an allegation was made against him about being involved in a “romantic” relationship with one of his female students, an arrest report read.

After speaking with the student, police learned the two were in a relationship for about a year, which had become physical.

he student told police they would mostly talk over Discord, a messaging application.

Conversations obtained by police showed Birriel would try to persuade her to send erotic, nude and “racy” photos of her to him. He also would describe the sexual things he would do to her, police wrote in the report.

In one conversation, the two talked about an incident that happened at the school. Police said Birriel had kissed the student and grabbed her under her clothes.

An arrest warrant was issued for Stephen Gentry, 29, last Wednesday, and he appeared in Sarpy County Court last Thursday, when his bond was set at $10,000. He also was ordered to have no contact with any minors outside of his own children.

Investigators believe Gentry had inappropriate contact with a student in January, according to court records, after the parents of the student in question went to school district officials with concerns.

Gentry resigned in February after the investigation began. He had been with the district for three years.

If convicted, Gentry faces up to two years in prison. His next court date is set for April 13.

Collier County sheriff’s deputies arrested Travis Westberry, 30, of Summit Place Circle in Naples, on a felony charge connected with inappropriate relationships he had with two juvenile victims. He is charged with transmission of material harmful to minors by electronic device or equipment.

Westberry is a math teacher and boys varsity basketball coach at Immokalee High School. The investigation began Tuesday after the victims disclosed information about Westberry to a Collier County Public Schools staff member, according to the CCSO.

The CCSO arrest report states that a female student was in Westberry’s math class when he pulled his chair up next to her desk to help her with classwork. He placed his hand on her inner thigh and began rubbing it until she pulled away. She told investigators this had happened twice before. The same victim also said that Westberry took out his phone and showed her photos of himself naked and a video of himself masturbating. He then requested she send photos of herself to him, so she pretended she did not speak English and he left her alone.

The report states the victim met with another student, listed in the report as another victim, and together, they reported Westberry to school officials.

Westberry told deputies after his arrest that he has struggled with sex addiction and has gone to therapy for it. He said his wife was aware of his addiction and had previously advised him not to take a job teaching young women, according to the arrest report. He admitted to investigators that he had done what the victim said he did, that he knew she was a minor and apologized.

The investigation is ongoing.
