From your explanation it seems like it goes back to the black people are lazy and don't like to work racist mythology. Doesn't it? I mean I've never heard it, but it doesn't seem like that big of a mystery to me. Obviously Crawford HAD heard it before. Maybe it's popular in Boston. Don't let anyone ever tell you Boston isn't filled with plenty of morons and racists. My brother almost got killed there one day, and he's white. (cops) Even he always said if he was black he'd be dead. And he's nobody's idea of a crusader.
I can't see it being used about blacks because of the stereotype that they are lazy and don't work. If you don't work, monday is not such a bad day.
