White House Hopeful Rudy Giuliani's South Carolina Campaign Chairman Indicted on Cocaine Charges

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,284637,00.html

Sociological commentary:

Twenty five years later - a quarter of a century - we're still yucking it up over Mayor Marion Barry, who committed the lesser offense of merely buying and smoking cocaine (not dealing and selling it).

I'm sure this white dude's offense will be barely mentioned today, and forgotten about within 48 hours.

I could be going out on a limb here ;), but I think Mayor Barry conveniently fit the stereotype caricature of the black criminal. He fit perfectly with the Klan mentality of: "See?! They're all criminals! You can't even trust one of them to run a city!"

What's interesting is, it's starting to look like Rudy may have surrounded himself with nearly as many criminals as bush...though of course, they haven't been in the position to commit war crimes, yet.

LOL

Surely you're not suggesting that the Bush 2000 campaign slogan of "Returning Honor and Integrity to the White House", was simply a ruse?

The mayor of Washington D.C. is a far higher profile position than the State Treasurer of South Carolina. That's just a fact. And when the mayor of a major area such as D.C. gets caught smoking crack its going to be a big deal. You can try to make it a racial issue but its not.

Cawacko, is there any event that you believe race did play a roll in?

Because you are big on accusing people of "playing the race card" and I have not once see you admit that race played any roll in anything. So I am wondering, would you have claimed in the 1960's that anyone suggesting that the particular people being prevented from registering to vote, was due to their race, was "playing the race card" or "trying to make this a racial issue" when really it was just due to a poor record keeping system?

Race plays a role in a lot of things. But that doesn't change that the Mayor of Washington D.C. is a far higher profile position than state treasurer of South Carolina. I'm not giving this idiot from South Carolina a pass, he's an f'ing moron and I hope he does plenty of jail time. When you have a mayor of a major area caught on TV doing crack though that is going to make national news.

I heard enough of the Marian Barry jokes to believe that race absolutely played a part. Very few things have only one reason, usually there are several contributing factors, race was one of them IMO.

Ok, I was just wondering because you are always with the race card thing. I thought maybe you believed all race problems had been solved. :)

Just because DC is not a state. Normally a state level official trumps any mayor.
SC has a hundred or so mayors and only one State Treasurer.

For the last few decades, mayors of major american cities have gone to jail for tax evasion, bribery, and yes, pedopehlia. I bet you can't name a single one of them.

Barry was convicted of buying and smoking crack. A crime not really even as serious as some of this other crap. Yet, a quarter century later, cons in particular are still snickering about it.

Why? I submit to you that not only it's because he's black, but he engaged in an activity that is the worst kind of caricature of the black community: crack cocaine. It was the perfect symbolic moment, to feed into the Klan caricautures that many white people have in their hearts.

He got caught on video. People will remember that far longer as a result. Black comidians make fun of Marion Berry and so do other black people. To try to make it out that only (conservatives) whites who are wanna be klansmen make fun of Berry isn't true.

I can't name one of them you are right. What major city mayor has gone to jail in the past decade or two?
