Iraqi police and military are helping plant anti-US IEDs

A few nights ago, for example, we witnessed the death of one American soldier and the critical wounding of two others when a lethal armor-piercing explosive was detonated between an Iraqi Army checkpoint and a police one. Local Iraqis readily testified to American investigators that Iraqi police and Army officers escorted the triggermen and helped plant the bomb. These civilians highlighted their own predicament: had they informed the Americans of the bomb before the incident, the Iraqi Army, the police or the local Shiite militia would have killed their families.

As many grunts will tell you, this is a near-routine event. Reports that a majority of Iraqi Army commanders are now reliable partners can be considered only misleading rhetoric.

There are no parallels between Iraq and Viet Nam, naaah, nope, cant see it, learning from past mistakes isn't important, nope, these soldiers are professionals and they knew what they were getting into when they joined, what we need is a 'surge' and everything will be ok.....

gawd, this makes my blood pressure boil.

Did you all read the entire article? This thing was written by men currently on duty in Iraq. These are the men, Bush and the supporters of this war tell us are in full support of the mission, like they have any fucking choice. Christ, writing this story for the NYT may actually cost these guys rank or even their freedom for a while. Yet the last line, written after the report of our failure there is most telling about what soldiers do and how much it does not matter if our policy is right or wrong.

"We need not talk about our morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through."

If I die before Bush the only thing I am going to ask Satan is the day that fucker dies, I get to be on the welcoming committee.

It appears she listened to her opponents who mentioned that not one of the candidates on the D side ever said that the troops were doing a good job during their debates.

Righhhhtt, because you have to step up like plastic Mitt, and say "first just let me say that the solidiers, well, what can I say? Give it up for our boys ladies and gentlemen! <Loud applause, people jump to their feet>

....before you send them to die, to kill, to have their legs and faces blown off, while saying that your own fine boys will stay home, thanks, there are after all, campaign signs to hammer into lawns.

I forgot.

Which changes nothing about the point that they made. During the debates before Iowa, never did any of the D candidates say they were doing a good job. I don't know if they have since during any debate, but it seems that at least one of them said, "Hmmm.. Geez, they have a point."

Now as for the "surge is working" part. It can't work, the whole point of it was to provide a window for their government to step up. Instead of stepping up they stepped out and abandoned the government to Shia rule. The surge isn't working, it can't.

I have always supported the troops (except for a few like abu grabass), but have never supported the war.

Yeah, this was an amazing article. Well written, informative, and totally on point.

Its amazing that a handfull of Sargeants in Iraq can write a better, and more honest assessment of the situation, than all the hack Chickenhawks who fly over to the green zone for a few days, and pronounce that things are going well.
