New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Commutes Sentence of Man Sent to Jail for Owning Guns Legally

A man given seven years in prison after being found with two guns he purchased legally in Colorado has had his sentence commuted, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced Monday.

Huh! he was jailed for having guns? And given time? This doesn't make sense, I tried to search for some explanation and all the search returns are from the wingnut echo chamber posting it everywhere. Anyone know the real details?

Aitken's mother called the police on him after he was distraught over a custody issue and police found handguns, hollow point bullets, and high capacity magazines in a box in the trunk of his car.

Aitken claimed he was protected under a state exemption because he was moving from Mount Laurel to Hoboken at the time. A Burlington County judge refused to allow the jury to see the exemptions, claiming Aitken's defense team did not present enough evidence during the trial to show he was moving."

Makes more sense now, while locking him up would been stupid and unjust, one wonders if calling the police over a 'distraught' man with handguns didn't save lives? Sounds like the attorneys screwed up as well as the judge. But law is law much as we complain. We have thousands in jail over possession of illegal drugs which never kill anyone quite as nicely as a hollow point. We could free them and save a bunch.

So why the HELL should someone be thrown in jail for mere possession of firearms in the trunk of their car, whether they are moving or not? It was a bullshit arrest, and a bullshit conviction made under a bullshit, unconstitutional law.

Why the fuck do people live in these states. The "Castle Doctrine" applies to cars in NM so we get to keep loaded guns in our cars as if they were our homes.

no one is talking about the alleged facts which led to the phone call which led to the police coming....

why you had to interject that into this is bizarre....and what is even more bizarre, is that you seem to actually agree his conviction/sentence is unjust....

what was your point again?
