Before the first known Europeans

For a long while, it was accepted that the first confirmed sighting of Antarctica took place in 1820 by Russian explorers. The following year, the first American confirmed the sight of the great icy continent.

History is changing now with a paper written by New Zealander researchers that have suggested that the Māori — the island nation’s indigenous people — were actually the first humans to come into contact with Antarctica.

“We found connection to Antarctica and its waters have been occurring since the earliest traditional voyaging, and later through participation in European-led voyaging and exploration, contemporary scientific research, fishing, and more for centuries,”

The Polynesian peoples were the world's premier seafarers and explorers. Anyone who crossed thousands of miles of trackless Pacific Ocean to reach Hawaii and Easter Island presumably could have made it Antarctica.
