NH Attorney General Threatens Candidate Julia Miranda

November 2, 2007

Ward 4 City Council candidate Julia Miranda has been threatened with one to seven years in state prison by the New Hampshire Attorney General. In a “Cease and Desist Order” sent to Miranda today, the Attorney General alleges that Ms. Miranda’s offer to give away her $500 city council paychecks to randomly chosen Ward 4 voters amounts to “a direct or indirect bribe”.

Throughout the campaign Ms. Miranda has made it clear that the money would be given to those who vote in Ward 4 in this election, meaning that anyone who votes for her opponent would also qualify to receive the money.

The purpose of these giveaways was not to bribe voters but to prove that Ms. Miranda is serious about lowering taxes. Instead of shoving tax dollars in her pocket, she intended to return them directly to taxpayers. We at the Miranda campaign find it interesting the Attorney General chooses to threaten Ms. Miranda when candidates of all stripes frequently promise voters all forms of monetary “benefits” in order to get their votes.

For example, if a politician promises upon election to increase the pay of all bureaucrats in the city, does that not amount to a bribe? Apparently, it’s okay for big government candidates to promise to give taxpayer dollars away to voters via government programs but it’s not okay for small government candidate Julia Miranda to give away her paychecks.

As she is not interested in spending any time in New Hampshire state prison, consider this public notice that Julia Miranda officially rescinds her offers to give away her city council paychecks to voters. She has instead decided to give away her paychecks to local charities and nonprofits like Cheshire TV.

The bold section is spot on. Why is it okay to promise benefits to select groups but not to promise one to random citizens? Apparently, small government politics is illegal in New Hamsphire.

Also, this woman couldn't possibly be a libertarian, according to all reports on this website they are all 21 year old men.

This was pure Barnum and Bailey politics and not the actions of a serious candidate. If lowering taxes is such a wonderful idea, why did she feel she had to resort to gimmicks to sell it?

Irrespective of Ms. Miranda's political ideology, this idea simply was not smart. You cannot give away money to voters during an election .. which by the way, is a long ass way from politicians making campaign promises .. that they ultimately don't keep.

It would seem to me that this is a nobrainer.

She not being threatened because she's a libertarian, she's being threatened because she was attempting something that could be perceived as illegal and was most certainly ill-advised.

Why would she ever want to be seen as attempting to buy votes?

The truth is that all the screaching, whining, and moaning about lower taxes is falling on deaf ears today. That dog just don't hunt like it once did.

Americans have come to recognize there is a point of diminshing returns when it comes to whining about taxes, and politicians who make taxes the central focus of their campaigns aren't finding the traction they hope for .. so this one called on Barnum and Bailey .. hoping to get some attention.

Then, when she got called on her gimmick .. now she's wants to give it to charity.

Who falls for this kinda' shit?
