Yes, I can see how if you wanted to continue justifying love and adoration of Trump, you would have to imagine that Trump was just "joking around" about Zelensky being a dictator and Ukraine being to blame for getting invaded.

Give me a list of specific hard-and-fast, reliable rules for how I can tell when Trump is lying or when he's telling the truth.

It was a negotiation tactic to make Zelenski more malleable to taking a deal to stop the killing on both sides of the war.
 
I remember in 2016, his supporters would always tell us "you can't take him literally."

And people are still saying it now.

Absolute insanity that he is President. Someone we shouldn't take literally.

Trump has never said anything genuinely supportive of Zelensky, and in three years Trump has never given the slightest indication he wants Ukraine to prevail on terms favorable to them, even when directly asked about it.
