The UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, has told Home Office agencies to scrap courses with Challenge Consultancy, a diversity firm which aims to alert people to their unconscious biases. Challenge Consultancy has said that Peter Pan character Captain Hook carries a sinister message on disability. It has used the slogan “if you have a brain, you have a bias”. Now it has fewer paying customers.
Priti Patel herself is from an ethnic minority (Ugandan Asian), as is the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak. Unconscious bias training was made a requirement for Whitehall staff in 2014 under Prime Minister David Cameron, who had no senior Cabinet members from ethnic minorities. Maybe it worked?
