Violence has been erupting in Rio for about a week now, because of increased police presence in certain neighborhoods.

It's been goin on for a week. Brazil recently called in it's Marine forces to help with peace keeping, in addition to several other police units. They're also deploying armored vehicles in the area, so I'm guessing things are pretty rough.
