No one wants to go to Charlie Rangel’s birthday party

There won't be very many people on hand to help longtime Rep. Charlie Rangel blow out his 80 birthday candles this year.

Lawmakers, friends and politicians are bailing on next week's birthday party for the Democrat, who was recently charged with 13 ethics violations. The party typically draws huge crowds, but apparently some folks want to keep their distance this year.

The New York Times reports on the myriad excuses:

[New York City] Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said he did not know if the party was still on when asked recently if he would attend. "I don't know what the facts are," Mr. Bloomberg said. "I was planning to go, but...."

... "I wish I could be at his birthday party," [Rep. Carolyn] Maloney said in an interview, adding that her plans to skip the event had nothing to do with the ethics charges. ...

"It's too bad the party is scheduled for the same day of the [local Fire Department] parade," [Rep. John] Hall said. "This was scheduled way in advance."

The House ethics committee charged Rangel with 13 violations July 29.

Maybe Rangel should have held his party closer to his actual birthday: June 11.
