Well, they need us as a trading partner and we need them. I think the disconnect lies in that trump thinks everything should be 50/50 regarding how much of their crap we import vs how much of our crap they import.

He doesn't seem to grasp that our crap is a ton more expensive to produce than their crap, so fewer of Chinese can afford our expensive crap while just about every American can afford their cheap crap.

Hence, there's a bigger demand in America for cheap Chinese crap than there is in China for expensive American crap

So in his deficient little cartoon brain, trumpstein thinks he can balance it out by hitting them with absurdly high tariffs and they'll have to eat it.
