According to NBC News, Keith Siegel is alive and is expected to be among 33 hostages released by Hamas as part of a ceasefire agreement.
Siegel and his wife, Aviva, were taken hostage on Oct. 7, 2023, during a Hamas-led attack that killed more than 1,000 people in Israel and led to hundreds being kidnapped.
Aviva was released after 51 days and she's been calling for Keith's release ever since.
“To be in darkness for so many months, enduring physical deprivations or worse, I hope his head and heart remain intact,” said Alon Tal, a childhood friend of Siegel.
In a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel in November 2023, Aviva Siegel and a 4-year-old girl were among the hostages released by Hamas. Wednesday’s agreement is the first ceasefire between the two parties since then.
North Carolina leaders, including U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis and Gov. Josh Stein, expressed joy over Siegel’s impending return.
“So happy for his wife Aviva–a hostage herself–and his loving family,” Tillis wrote on X. “It’s good to see the Biden Administration and Trump Transition working together to get this deal done. God bless the hostages being released and to all those who never made it back.”
“I join all of North Carolina in rejoicing over reports that NC native Keith Siegel will soon be headed home,” Stein wrote on X. “He and his wife Aviva have endured unimaginable hardship.”
