Let’s say you’re a law-abiding, civic-minded American citizen engaged in some form of activism for change or political dissent or, God forbid, entering a mosque. You want to be able to go about these democratic pursuits without some foreign surveillance system monitoring your every step and conversation, am I right? And you want to think the United States has a system in place to keep you secure from international spyware, correct?
Well, if that’s how you really feel, text those beliefs at your own risk.
It’s not just the Chinese you have to worry about monitoring your cellphone call or email. That’s one lesson that privacy advocates are adding to findings from a House Intelligence Committee Reportreleased this week that warned of the surveillance risk posed by Chinese telecom companies.

I worked for T-Mobile UK until last year when I took voluntary redundancy. At that time, they were just bringing new comms equipment called GGSNs and SGSNs made by Huawei. The only way that the British government would allow their use was for a whole shitload of monitoring equipment to be installed by GCHQ to check for backdoors and industrial espionage. Last I knew they were talking about putting a new core network using Huawei routers which compete head on with Cisco and Juniper but are a lot cheaper.

Just watched Panorama re Murdoch and On digital.
Seems to me hua wei should be encouraged as they have been placed on a watch list. Its the people we dont know about who are the international danger

China does have a history of extensive industrial espionage so Huawei and others do need to be watched carefully.

That is basically what I said, but the guy in the striped jersey and a sack labelled 'swag' is probably a safer bet than someone you don't know who decides he is going to hack into your bank and take your life savings.
But we also have a history of industrial espionage, the yanks certainly do and a UK company with whom I was associated had advanced equipment being shown at a Moscow exhibition (under security) stripped down and put back together overnight.
