Yes, it really would be cool, but I can't believe anything this guy says. He managed to get the Bush bashing in his speech too.

we've been to the moon, why not focus on mars? the rover mission far surpassed anyone's hopes....in order for us to truly engage in space travel, we have to set our sights past the moon.

Yeah I'm fiscally conservative. I fucking hate paying for troops in Europe how woul I like increasing debt to fly to mars. WTF

I'm guessing Obama simply means that sometime, well beyond the span of his presidency , we will ultimately land a spacecraft on Mars. JFK wasn't exactly in office when we landed on the Moon, but it happened in the decade he predicted. Had he not been shot, he would likely have been out of office for 4 years when it happened.

Because we have the tech to get to the moon. We do not have the tech currently to get to Mars. The moon provides a natural test run for any new tech being developed.
