PolitiFact's Lie of the Year: 'Death panels'

rulings%2Ftom-pantsonfire.gif

Of all the falsehoods and distortions in the political discourse this year, one stood out from the rest.

"Death panels."

The claim set political debate afire when it was made in August, raising issues from the role of government in health care to the bounds of acceptable political discussion. In a nod to the way technology has transformed politics, the statement wasn't made in an interview or a television ad. Sarah Palin posted it on her Facebook page.

Her assertion — that the government would set up boards to determine whether seniors and the disabled were worthy of care — spread through newscasts, talk shows, blogs and town hall meetings. Opponents of health care legislation said it revealed the real goals of the Democratic proposals. Advocates for health reform said it showed the depths to which their opponents would sink. Still others scratched their heads and said, "Death panels? Really ?"

The editors of PolitiFact.com, the fact-checking Web site of the St. Petersburg Times , have chosen it as our inaugural "Lie of the Year."

PolitiFact readers overwhelmingly supported the decision. Nearly 5,000 voted in a national poll to name the biggest lie, and 61 percent chose "death panels" from a field of eight finalists.

This is the story of how two words generated intense heat in the national debate over health care.

(Excerpt) The death panels was the name given to a group of bureaucrats who would decide and who lives and who dies, taking away the decison-making by doctors.

Human Events writes on December 26, 2010, that puts rationing in at its more gruesome effect. And who will decided who lives and who dies? Some unelected power-crazed members of the Obama administration. (End)

Who decides today? Some paper pusher in an insurance office?

So, what's the difference? The difference is everyone will be covered by the same rules under Obama/government. As it stands now a person with a less expensive medical plan receives less coverage.

So, it will be up to the population, in general, to decide what should be covered and considering there are over 300 million people that's a lot of illnesses to be covered.

That's the benefit of a single payer or universal plan which is where things are headed. The minimum wage earner will be entitled to the same procedures as the multi-millionaire.

#3. NO, faux news half truths and lies sponsored by insurance companies.
#4. Yes
Insurance companies have instituted death panels for years especially if the insured is middle class or poor. There are many examples of insurance companies not covering sick and dying people, here are just a few examples.
