Obamacare inequality

Two men, both in their 60s and healthy, who live only a few miles from each other, have many things in common.

But, starting Jan. 1, one will pay $44 per month for health care while the other will pay $528.

This is the reality for many as the Affordable Care Act reached full implementation on New Year’s Day.

New federal subsidies will shrink premiums for some, while others have discovered that, their premiums are increasing.

Daniel Smiechowski, 60, qualified for the most generous subsidies offered, which allowed him to purchase a plan from Anthem Blue Cross at a price that seems unreal.

“They’re going to subsidize my monthly health care to the tune of $614 a month. I will pay a mere $44 a month,” he said.

David Morrison, a self-employed software developer, gets no help from the government. After learning that his existing policy from Anthem Blue Cross would end, Morrison, 62, said he shopped around and eventually found new coverage at $528 per month, $187 more than he paid in 2013.
