The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was fatally shot in Manhattan early Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown, in what top police officials are calling a “targeted attack”—as police search for the gunman.
Thompson was shot in the back just before 7 a.m. and was rushed to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, police officials said.
The gunman was “lying in wait for several minutes” before approaching and firing at Thompson from behind as he walked to the hotel, New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference, calling it a “brazen targeted attack” that did not appear to be a random act of violence.
Officers are still looking for the alleged attacker, who fled first on foot, then on an electric bike, and was last seen in Central Park, Tisch said—police are offering $10,000 to anyone with information related to Thompson’s death.
The suspect is believed to be a light-skinned man wearing a black face mask, said Joe Kenny, the New York City Police Department’s chief of detectives.
