Obama's Swiss banks

There is so much silly about on Obama's attackt ad on Mitt Romney -- I'll post about Obama subsidizing overseas manufacturing later -- but the attack on Romney's Swiss bank account is the dumbest part.

And, frankly, Obama isn't the type of guy I would expect to make a big deal about Swiss banks.

Consider that Obama appointed as IRS Chief Counsel William J. Wilkins, a former lobbyist for the Swiss Bankers Association (despite Obama's claims that he has "excluded lobbyists from policy making jobs"). Also, Obama's No. 2 White House aide, Mona Sutphen, has cashed out to Swiss Bank UBS.

Also, Obama's "new best friend," and golf and basketball buddy according to a 2011 New York Times article is Robert Wolf, CEO of UBS. Obama put Wolf on his Economic Advisory Board.

So if Swiss banks are somehow baaad, as Obama implies in his attack ad, which is worse: keeping some of your money in a Swiss bank, or being very cozy with the lobbyists and executives of Swiss banks?

Your title is false and a direct misrepresentation. How Republican of you! Obama does not own, nor does he have money in any Swiss banks.

actually, since the disclosures filed show that Romney closed his Swiss bank account in 2010, neither does Romney.....

Well, ask Mitt Romney to release his tax returns. At this point, the good money is on Romney using the Swiss bank account and offshore investments for the usual tax avoidance purposes.

Isn't that why rich Americans use Swiss banks? Unless, of course, Romney's Swiss bank had a branch with an ATM right around the corner...

I know all about why Romney closed the account:

Malt, who oversees Romney's blind trusts, acknowledged during a conference call with reporters that he decided to shut down the Swiss account because he worried it could create a headache for Romney's campaign. "It might or might not be consistent with Governor Romney's political views," he said.

That it did! But is that the real reason?

Under pressure from federal authorities, the Swiss bank UBS is closing the hidden offshore accounts of its well-heeled American clients, potentially allowing their secrets to spill into the open.

In a step that would have once been unthinkable in the rarefied world of Swiss banking, UBS will shut about 19,000 accounts that prosecutors suspect have gone undeclared to the Internal Revenue Service.

So it looks like Mittens had two choices...close out the account and hide his money elsewhere, or be outed.

anyone using offshore accounts is using them as tax shelters, be they democrat or republican. anyone being an apologist of using some bullshit excuse to portray their politician of choice in some 'honest' light, is lying.
 
romney claims he has paid all applicable taxes for his money in the swiss banks. it is not illegal to put your money in swiss banks, so long as you pay your taxes. so no, not everyone who puts their money there does so for the purpose of illegally avoiding taxes.

and onus is not on romney to prove his innocence. the irs has never made a claim against him as far as i know. and they have been cracking down hardcore in recent years.

Tax avoidance is legal, but it's still tax avoidance.

And forgive me if I hold the man who wants to be president to a higher standard that "legal." I mean, it's legal to scream at old people and small children but that doesn't make it right.
