oldest brit skeleton had dark skin & blue eyes

It seems if you look around at the world's peoples darker skin is the default.

It's hypothesized that populations of northern latitudes lost pigmentation since it's a barrier to Vitamin D production.
Darker skin is advantageous when it comes to sun exposure... even indigenous Arctic peoples are dark-skinned.
Basically the same thing.

Another hypothesis:
“Once human populations migrated northward, away from the tropical onslaught of UVB, pigment was gradually lost in service of metabolic conservation. The body will not waste precious energy and proteins to make proteins that it no longer needs.”https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2014/06/1...s-skin’s-barrier-set-northern-europeans-apart

Interesting.

I'm hoping to take a physical anthropology course next semester; looking forward to learning more about human variation.

yeap

and in areas where sunlight is more scarce lighter skin that absorbs more sunlight may become a genetic advantage for natural selection

northern Europeans don't get as much sunlight reflection off the snow and dont need the darker skin
