"...but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude, that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people, while there is a large body of citizens, little if at all inferior to them in discipline and use of arms, who stand ready to defend their rights..." -- Alexander Hamilton speaking of standing armies in Federalist 29.

"Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation. ... Notwithstanding the military establishments in the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." -- James Madison, author of the Bill of Rights, in Federalist Paper No. 46. at 243-244

"Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American ... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people" -- Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been recognized by the General Government; but the best security of that right after all is, the military spirit, that taste for martial exercises, which has always distinguished the free citizens of these states...Such men form the best barrier to the liberties of America." -- Gazette of the United States, October 14, 1789

Can it be denied that the US is the most powerfull country in the world, wheter militarily or economically?

What factors caused or allowed this awesomeness?

What part can be attributed to the security provided by a well regulated and heavily armed millitia? A gun behind every blade of grass?

Is it true that a megalomaniac intent on ruling the world did not invade Switzerland because he needed somewhere safe to store his prizes of war?

Would Israel still exist if not for the strength of her arms?

Israels existence is up to God as the Bible has said all along.
He allowed Israels enemies to conquer them on several occasions.
who is to say that god will not yet again let Israel be conquered?

i think that each state should maintain a citizen soldier militia where the total of soldiers in each militia will out number by a factor of 2 the standing military of the federal government and have access to and be trained to use all of the weapons that the federal military uses - coastal states (including states with water ways (lakes/rivers/sea/ocean with a border with another nation)) would have a navy and coast guard as part of its militia - also an air force for each state and a special forces trained group

said militia soldiers should take their militia weapons home with them (subject to being stored in a weapons safe provided by the state) - said weapons and safe to be returned (or sold to the soldier) to the state when the soldier leaves the militia

non-personal weapons like artillery, aircraft, ships, boats, etc. would be stored at local armories, airfields or marinas/shipyards

really? the most militarized nation, domestically and internationally, is awesome? or are you simply referring to the tremendous oversized and powered aspect, not necessarily how wonderful it is?

What part can be attributed to the security provided by a well regulated and heavily armed millitia? A gun behind every blade of grass?
define militia in this context.
