BOSTON (Reuters) - It bills itself as the world's "most prestigious college discussion board," giving a glimpse into law school admissions policies, post-graduate social networking and the hiring practices of major law firms.

But the AudoAdmit site, widely used by law students for information on schools and firms, is also known as a venue for racist and sexist remarks and career-damaging rumors.

Now it's at the heart of a defamation lawsuit that legal experts say could test the anonymity of the Internet.

Good. I hope that the posters are publically outed, and made to pay damages. I hope that the word goes out, make it personal, post someone's name, and egregious lies about them, and you'll be unmasked.

I'm going to watch this case with great interest.

I agree, people do tend to go out of their way with impunity. That should end.

Does this mean we will get in trouble for calling AHZ a moron ?

No. This is for egregious cases of harrassment, which harms a person in real life. If you research someone to find out their real name, maybe get hold of a picture of them, and then post it on a webpage advertising them as a hooker, or posting their SS #, the right ruling in this case, will say that is actionable and you better be prepared to have yourself outed publically as the vile person that you are, and, pay damages.

Two things to consider.

1. When filing a lawsuit one can file it any place where the influence is reached. This means that you can, quite literally, choose any jurisdiction to file a lawsuit.

2. One gentleman in Australia filed a defamation lawsuit in Australia, he won.

Yeah, I've very recently been researching this sort of information. I hadn't seen the story you posted yet though, and found it very illuminating.
