Paycheck fairness dies in Senate

How many conservatives will reelect these morons who are working against women's best interests? Republicans should be ashamed for showing their disdain for equality in such a stark light.

"Women fell two votes short on Wednesday to coming closer to getting paid the same as men for the same work. Senate Republicans decided that equal pay for women should not even be considered, as they blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act from moving to the floor.

The bill, which will not be brought up again in this Congress, faces more of an uphill battle in the next one, with Republicans gaining control of the House and more seats in the Senate.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would have updated the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by closing loopholes, strengthening incentives to prevent pay discrimination and prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages, according to the American Association of University Women, which has been pushing for its passage for 10 years. It also would have required employers to show that wage gaps are a result of factors other than gender, to collect better data on wages and develop training for women on salary negotiations.

The House had passed the bill in January 2009 and President Obama had pledged to sign it.

On Wednesday, “a cloture on the motion to proceed,” which means a vote to put the bill on the floor for debate, fell two votes short of the required 60 votes. The vote was 58 yes, 41 no and one, Lisa Murkowski, the Republican senator from Alaska, in her home state and not voting. All Republicans voted no along with Ben Nelson of Nebraska, the lone dissenting Democrat.

The vote was decried by AAUW, the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Women’s Law Center and other civic and labor organizations that had been pushing for passage."

Do you have a link to the actual bill?

It is not the governments business to dictate what wages private business must pay to an employee.....they don't force YOU to pay your babysitter a certain wage or what you must pay your neighbors son for cutting your grass...don't like the pay, don't take the job.

Uh, that's not the point, dingbat. Female job applicants can't ask in advance if they're getting paid the same as or less than their male counterpart. It would be career failure to do so.

Thats not the point....you KNOW the wage you are being offered....if you don't like it, don't take the job....if you're satisfied with the level of compensation, STFU.
We all worked and made that decision more than once in our lives...you want the government to make it for you....

No one asks if they are making the same as their counterparts though. Unless someone wants to tell you what they are making why is it anyone else's business at the office?

This is just another attempt, in a long line of attempts, to discredit Republicans. Gee willy winkers! :palm:

Women have been historically underpaid for like work that men perform for decades, but if it looks like an opportunity to lay the fault at the feet of the Republicans, and that is what this is ALL about, then she's going to take her shot.

Predictable.

The way the Republicans tell it, the only thing they hate more than discrimination is passing laws to do something about discrimination.

I agree and besides, it's not my problem. Leaves more money for me anyways. :)

Bravo is an excellent example of why the conservative cancer needs to be cut off from the body of society.
If I promise not to pwn you every time out will you like me more?

I feel almost guilty making you pinheads look like fools day after day....

The House bill (H.R. 1338) passed in July 2008.

Votes for: 233 Dems, 14 Repubs

Votes against: 0 Dems, 178 Repubs

The Senate bill (S. 3772) on preventing filibuster (60 votes) failed in November 2010.

Yea votes: 58 Dems

No votes: 41 Repubs

Anybody who thinks the repubs will ever give a sh*t about paycheck fairness for women has rocks in their head.

I'll admit after reading it I'm sure as hell glad the Republicans didn't support it. It looked to me like they are creating some new bureaucracy that can be used to control business under the guise of 'equality'. Like Superfreak I look at those sections 4-8 and cringe.

This bill wouldn't be needed if women were treated equally from square one.

Almost 50 years ago Congress passed The Equal Pay Act of 1963. It began "To prohibit discrimination on account of sex in the payment of wages by employers engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce. June 10, 1963 [S. 1409]". The point of the Lilly Ledbetter Act was to close the loopholes in that first law, which wasn't being adhered to strictly.

Why do we even have to pass a law for paycheck fairness? This should be a given. Nothing in the law is taking anything away from men. The fact that this is even on the agenda is a disgrace. It doesn't speak well for a country that calls itself the greatest country on earth.
