FUCK THE POLICE

911 EVERY DAY
The Beach Boys were a group that pretty much shat out bland pop tunes for a few years (three records a year, seriously), with lyrics that were mind bogglingly bland and stupid, until their lead songwriter took some acid, had a nervous breakdown, and wrote what is possibly the greatest rock album of all time, Pet Sounds. What's really amazing is that Brian Wilson alone was able to pretty much match the quality of Lennon + Mccartney as songwriters and George Martin as producer, all by himself. It didn't sell well at all, not nearly as good as their bland pop tune albums. He followed it up with a single, Good Vibrations, that was successful, however, and cost as much to produce as an entire album at the time.

Then Brian hired Park Van Dykes as a lyricist, who wrote some crazy, surreal lyrics, and started writing the music to SMiLE, as a way to challenge Teh Beatles. The rest of the band didn't like this, they just wanted to sell bland pop tunes like they used to. As soon as Van Dykes left the project, they pressured Brian into giving up the project, and The Beach Boys produced another bland pop album, Smiley Smile. Ironically, this was what lead to their downfall, as the entire rock world had moved way beyond stupid songs about cars and surfing by that time. The SMiLE album became somewhat of a legend, so 40 years later Brian came out alone and recorded the entire SMiLE album himself.

After listening to it, I honestly can't say it's as good as Pet Sounds. It's a bit of a disappointment. Anyone else listened to these two albums?

The Pet Sounds box set?

Yeah, they did a 4 cd box set. "The Pet Sounds Sessions." The album is included in its entirety in its original mono mix, as well as a stereo mix. The set also contains instrumental tracks, vocals-only tracks, alternate mixes, and edited highlights from the recording sessions for many of the album's songs, as well as several songs not included on the album.

The vocals only disc is amazing. Those boys could sing.
