Gotbaum kin's plea before dying: I'm not a terrorist!

Monday, October 1st 2007, 9:31 AM

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, at corner of 81st St. and Central Park West, reads statement on the death of Carol Anne Gotbaum (below).

The daughter-in-law of one of New York's top officials screamed, "I'm not a terrorist!" and fought with security officials in the Phoenix airport before being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed, witnesses told the Daily News yesterday.

Carol Anne Gotbaum, 45, of the upper West Side, died less than an hour later, after cops claim she apparently strangled herself while trying to escape from the handcuffs in a holding cell at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

"I'm not a terrorist! I'm a sick mom! I need help!" yelled the mother of three after she missed the 2:58 p.m. US Airways Express flight to Tucson, said airport workers who witnessed the confrontation Friday.

They said one cop put his knee in her back to restrain her while others grabbed her flailing arms.

"I believe she was a little not-there. She kept punching. She kept screaming. She kept kicking," one worker told The News. "She looked really scared, really frightened. I think she was afraid to go to jail."

Gotbaum's husband, Noah, is the son of longtime city labor leader Victor Gotbaum and the stepson of his wife, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, a possible candidate for mayor in 2009.

Betsy Gotbaum said her stunned family was still searching for answers in the sudden death.

"Carol was a wonderful, wonderful person," Betsy Gotbaum said. "She was a wonderful mother. She was sweet and kind and loving. At this moment, we are awaiting the results of the investigation."

Cops said Gotbaum was traveling alone and could not explain why she was in Phoenix or what prompted her anger. She was charged with disorderly conduct.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said Gotbaum kept screaming after she was placed in the holding cell, until cops realized she had been silent for several minutes and found her unresponsive. The county medical examiner has not determined a cause of death.

Had she not been related to powerfull and influential people we would likely not have even heard of this. Sad what happens that is never even reported... unless there is a video or the person is related to important people this shit happens and we never hear about it!

True. All the more reason to make the most of it when it does happen to a scion of the powerful and influential, however.

Say what!

something is weird in this story. how do you strangle yourself with handcuffs on? I dont even know if this is possible. I would think u would passout before you were able to finish yourself off.

It certainly seems to raise some suspicions.

Suspicions that our police are anything less than perfect ?
How unamerican of you. Go wash your mind out with some Rush Limbaugh.

"Carol was arrested Friday after she missed a flight from Phoenix to Tucson, where she planned to enter an alcohol-rehab facility. Police suspect that Carol may have strangled herself when she tried to wriggle free of her restraints while she was in custody, but her family has questions.

"We have strong concerns about how this 110-pound woman may have ended up strangling herself, given that she was cuffed behind her back and shackled to a bench," said Michael Manning, a Phoenix attorney hired by the Gotbaum family. He has successfully litigated three cases involving Maricopa County inmates who have died in restraint chairs. That includes a $2 million settlement for an inmate's family that was announced in June. The family also plans to bring in its own pathologist to attend Gotbaum's autopsy, which has been scheduled for this morning.

Carol, a mother of three, reportedly was subdued after running through Terminal 4 screaming, "I'm not a terrorist! I'm a sick mom! I need help!" according to a witness account on the New York Daily News Web site.

Her behavior at a US Airways Express gate may have been caused by a "delicate" mental state, Manning said, referring to Carol's battle with alcoholism."

Bottom line...if you come to AZ, don't get yourself handcuffed to a bench.

I've lived here for over 20 yrs and have not had any run-ins with the law, except for a fender bender. My experience is that the police here are just as professional as anywhere in this country. I play poker with a young police officer who likes to bust heads, but thats just his personality. But, if you raise a ruckus, run from them, act suspicious, have a gun or find yourself up against any of Sheriff Joe's Posse you ass may be grass. The concealed weapons laws here are pretty loose, so the cops are a bit jumpy. When I first moved here from the east I was sitting at a red light and a biker with a huge hand gun strapped to his leg rolled up beside me. I knew I wasn't in Ohio anymore Totto. Az's a great place, but dont fuck up.

I lived and worked in the Yuma area...from 1975-1979...Az is or was a great state...depends on what side of the law you are on...I am not all that sure about this case...but I can say I have seen some strange things happen when people are under the influence and under restraint...they can and do the unbeliveable...I willwait for the investigation to be completed before I form a opinion!
