Police have released the identity of a woman who was mauled to death by a dog on Sunday.

Fifty-five-year-old Angela Smith died after she was taken to a local hospital, suffering from severe injuries inflicted by the family pit bull.

Police responded to the home on Dexter Terrace Southeast around 6:30 p.m. after the attack was reported.

Smith was unconscious and suffering from what police described as “multiple trauma wounds.”

Neighbors say they often saw the woman walking the dog in the area. They say the dog had been aggressive towards other pets in the neighborhood.

The Humane Rescue Alliance says the dog was humanely euthanized on Sunday, after being removed from the home by Animal Control.

Police say a shooting call on Monday turned out to actually be a violent dog attack.

Officers say the 911 caller initially thought people had been shot due to the nature of the victim's wounds.

Upon arrival, police found four victims with dog bites.

The dog owner, a 36-year-old man, was found with several wounds and screaming in pain. Another 26-year-old man was found with severe bite wounds to his left arm and throat. The third victim, a 34-year-old woman, was semi-conscious, sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle and a 20-year-old was found dazed after being bit in the legs.

Police say the dog initially attacked one of the men and when the three other victims tried to stop the dog, they too were injured.

The victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

No reason was found for why the tri-colored pit bull initially attacked. It was taken into custody by Animal Care and Control.

A FedEx employee who was attacked by a pit bull is still recovering in the hospital, according to authorities.

Sheriff Ben Caldwell says the victim was injured in the face and head area while delivering mail to a home.

“It was pitiful, had blood all the side of his face," said Michael Worley, who helped the injured employee. "Part of his nose was torn out, his head was cut.”

Worley then when to get bandages to help the worker and says a nurse who lives nearby came to help.

WTVA spoke to the dog's owner, who was called home straight away.

“I thought I walked into a nightmare. I was about ready to cry," said David Dishman. "All I could think about was how bad I felt for the person that was injured.”

Dishman says his dog, named Charlie, is fine around his baby daughter.

Two residents in Cleveland's West 58th Street neighborhood suffered significant injuries, while protecting neighborhood children from a pit bull attack.

Becky Barker and Jay Anderson responded after hearing the screams of children who were being chased by three pit bulls they said were part of a one hour rampage in their neighborhood.

Barker told News 5 the pit bulls had children trapped on top of a car that was parked in front of her home, and when she stepped out to help, the pit bulls bit her multiple times in three areas of her body.

"They could have killed me, they really could have, if they would kept ripping me open like they did," Barker said.

"The children were screaming, and the dogs are just like clawing up this ladies car to get at these kids," she said.

Jay Anderson also suffered several dog bites on the backs of his legs and back.

Anderson said he tried to use a screwdriver to fend-off the attacking dogs, but one of the dogs was able to disarm him.

"Just terrible, it was a horrible thing, kind of scary," Anderson said.

"So I turned around and looked at the dog that took my screwdriver, and a second one started attacking me" he said.

Cleveland EMS, the fire department, and the Cleveland dog warden responded to the scene.

Residents told News 5 the owner of the dogs was cited, and one of the pit bulls was confiscated.

Nathaniel Thomas Pettiford, 42, of Gainesville, the owner of three pit bulls, was arrested on a warrant, GPD spokesperson Officer. Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

Linda Swinburn, 50, was walking her dachshund on a leash when the pit bulls ran across the street and attacked her dog.

She put her body over her dog to protect her, but it was no use, she said. The pit bulls broke her dog’s neck and ripped her apart, Swinburn said. She suffered two broken fingers and bruised ribs from the attack.

The attack marked the fourth time in 14 months Pettiford’s dogs attacked another dog or person, the report said.

A pit bull jumped through a screen door at Pettiford’s home and attacked a small dog and two women July 6, 2017, the report said. Nobody answered the door when Animal Control Services arrived at Pettiford’s home.

Pettiford paid a fine after a pit bull menaced a neighbor walking down the street April 6. Two months later, a pit bull chased a woman back onto her own porch, the report said.

Pettiford is charged with one count of inflicting injury and one count of animal cruelty, according to online court records. He is held in Alachua County Jail.
