An infant suffered serious injuries after she was mauled by a large pit bull in the Logan Heights neighborhood, according to San Diego police.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. at a home in the 2200 block of Irving Avenue near Sicard Street.

The two-month-old girl, Jemma-Linda, suffered a cracked cranium, a puncture wound to her brain and an injury to her eye, according to her older sister, Taiylein Gonzalez. The baby was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Pit bull kills baby

Surgery couldn't save a Michigan infant who officials say died after the family dog bit her in the head.

An autopsy confirmed that Susannah Jean Murray, who was 3 weeks old, died from the dog bite, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Murray was left alone in the house with the family's three pit bulls for about five minutes before a caretaker checked on her, according to police. When the woman checked on the infant, she found Susannah bleeding from a severe head injury and one of the dogs with blood around its mouth. The child was taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital where she underwent nearly seven hours of surgery.

Neighbors told the paper that they were wary of the animals and had seen them act aggressively in the past.

But, parents and responsible owners should know to keep their own children and other children away from them, when the dogs do not know the children well, and MOST ESPECIALLY KEEP CHILDREN AND EVERYBODY ELSE AWAY FROM A NURSING MOTHER PIT BULL AND HER PUPPEES!

Other than that, they are great loving and lovable family pets!

I love all dogs, but breeds get a reputation for a reason.

Pit bulls were too often bred for nefarious reasons,
and what should have been undesirable genes were purposely sought.

I know one highly social and affectionate pit bull in the neighborhood,
but one dog is one dog.

My dogs, all beagles before the current terrier, have all been very friendly.
They let their human be the prick.
