A common refrain from the lefties is that conservatives want to destroy Socialist inSecurity and only the democrat party is there to protect it and keep it as is for the seasoned citizens. So I thought it would be instructive to have a little history lesson. But, first we must start off with a little quiz. It isn't hard. Only a couple of questions.

Which political party took the Social Security independent trust fund and moved it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it on anything?

Which political party started taxing Social Security benefits?

"Q1. Which political party took Social Security from the independent trust fund and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A1: There has never been any change in the way the Social Security program is financed or the way that Social Security payroll taxes are used by the federal government. The Social Security Trust Fund was created in 1939 as part of the Amendments enacted in that year. From its inception, the Trust Fund has always worked the same way. The Social Security Trust Fund has never been "put into the general fund of the government."

Another raising of taxes by Ronald Reagan. http://firedoglake.com/2009/02/01/newsflash-ronald-reagan-raised-taxes-you-idiots/
"Faced with looming deficits, Reagan raised taxes again in 1983 with a gasoline tax and once more in 1984, this time by $50 billion over three years, mainly through closing tax loopholes for business. Despite the fact that such increases were anathema to conservatives–and probably cost Reagan’s successor, George H.W. Bush, reelection–Reagan raised taxes a grand total of four times just between 1982-84."

Q3. Which political party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A3. The taxation of Social Security began in 1984 following passage of a set of Amendments in 1983, which were signed into law by President Reagan in April 1983. These amendments passed the Congress in 1983 on an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote."
