By ROBERT LAURIE - Obama continues his difficult post-debate week with a round of bad polling.
Everyone loves to dismiss Rasmussen. Despite the fact that they did the most accurate polling of 2008, the mainstream and left-wing media always try to write them off as some kind of conservative polling juggernaut. Because of this, it’s always more fun to look at polls from Democrat-friendly sources. Plus, it can be informative since you know they’re going to do everything in their power to skew things in favor of the all-time greatest President, Barack Obama.
So, when staunch pro-Obama outlets like the Politico are having a tough time painting a rosy picture for the President, you can be sure things are getting really bad.
According to the newest Battleground Poll conducted by The Politico and George Washington University, Obama now leads Romney by only 1 point, 49% to 48%. This statistical tie is, obviously, inside the margin of error and point closer than it was one week ago.
Worse news for the White House? Romney now leads among the all-important “independent” voter by a huge 16 point margin, 51% to 35%. In this category, Romney has improved by four points over the last week alone. This represents a 24 point decline among independents for Obama since 2008.
Even worse news for the White House? Obama’s voters aren’t as interested in voting as Romney’s. Only 73% of Obama supporters are “extremely likely” to vote, as opposed to 84% for Romney. At the same time, among those who categorize themselves as “extremely likely” to vote Romney is beating Obama 52% to 46% - up two points from a week ago.
That’s got to be as bad as it gets, right?
Wrong.
Even worse, worse news for the White House? 85% of the calls used to create this poll were made prior to Obama’s disastrous debate. Because of this, these numbers are probably better than they’ll be during the next round of polling, which will be made public on Thursday.
Considering that these polls don’t take into account the full impact of last week’s debate, the only deduction one can make is that things were headed South for the President before he was trounced by Romney. If that’s the case, Obama has a very, very, tough slog ahead of him.
