Post-Trump, the GOP Continues to Be the Party of (White) Grievances

After the GOP lost the presidential election in 2012, the Republican National Committee mounted an autopsy that it called the “most comprehensive post-election review” ever made of an electoral loss. That postmortem concluded that the party had a weak message and a lousy ground game and needed to better pitch its policies to reach out to women, voters of color, and gay Americans. Of course, the party did none of that and in 2016 allowed itself to become a cult that celebrated a bigoted and misogynistic demagogue with little allegiance to principle or policy. Now in the aftermath of the GOP’s 2020 loss, rather than conduct another dissection, the party is feasting on its own entrails, as it reconfirms it is mostly a party for pissed-off white people who are obsessed with grievances.

It’s no surprise that Republican pols who acted cravenly during the Trump years are continuing to genuflect before the former president, who still holds sway with their party’s base. But the real sign of the party’s debasement is that base. Many of these people, to put it kindly, are living within a world of paranoid psychosis. And the GOP has become a vehicle to exploit and fuel their irrational resentment.

Hello guno,

We are so lucky to have Mother Jones.

They're not afraid to say it like it is.

(ironically, that is what Trump supporters thought of their choice)

The chief difference is that Mother Jones backs up what it says with facts.

White Grievance is a meme that tugs at the worst emotions.

Like what? They are a normal party acting as the parties both have until the Trump grievance party was born. All he does is bitch. Every day is Festivus for him.

Grievances like:

Creating Rights for special-interest groups like feminists, the LGBTPDQRSTU front, Blacks, Hispanics, etc., that don't apply to society as a whole.

Identity politics. Putting race and gender ahead of society as a whole.

Politics of envy. Pitting people against each other on the basis of economic success or failure.

The subject really doesn't matter. From abortion, to voting rights, to Chinese Disease, the Democrats find a negative then turn it into a political grievance. There is no compromise or trying to work together. From the Democrat POV, the solution is to destroy those with whom they have an issue-- a grievance.

They are singularly the party of grievances. Failed Democrat gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, defended this description of her party. "I would argue that identity politics is exactly who we are, and it's exactly how we won. When we refuse to engage in the conversation of identity politics, when we refuse to acknowledge that we see you and we understand you and we understand the barriers that you face, then what we are met with is a lack of trust."

That is, in short, she ran on a platform of grievances. You can hear it in the Democrat's rhetoric. "It's unfair!" "It's unequal!" It's the politics of a six-year-old throwing a tantrum. The Democrats are the party of grievances through and through...
