Pot grower falls for phony ransom note

Marathon, Florida (CNN) -- It's usually the bad guys who leave ransom notes, but in the Florida Keys, it was the cops who tried it -- and it helped them bag a suspected marijuana grower.

Police say a man called a phone number -- left anonymously by police after they confiscated some marijuana plants -- in hopes of getting the plants back. Instead, the man got arrested.

Monroe County sheriff's department special investigations detectives said they seized six large marijuana plants from a vacant, wooded lot, in Marathon, Florida, after they were tipped off by a citizen. Detectives left behind their own version of a ransom note, hoping to get a response.

"Thanks for the grow!" read the note, which included a phone number. "You want them back ? Call for the price ... let's talk."

Col. Rick Ramsay of the sheriff's office said detectives "were laughing to see if somebody was dumb enough to call back."

About 20 minutes after the note was left, the phone rang, and a man asked what he would have to do to get the plants back, police said.

"They were shocked this guy called. They negotiated back and forth over a price, and finally settled at $200," said Ramsay.

Detectives met the man on a nearby street corner, and he allegedly paid $200 without knowing who he was paying.

Police said a 48-year-old man was arrested on charges of cultivating and selling marijuana as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. Ramsay said officers confiscated a ledger book that contained detailed information on the growing operation including "when he planted, fertilized, watered, and harvested."

"He even named the plants. One was TNT, and another was Diesel," Ramsay said.

Remember kids, smoking pot does not effect your brain.

Not sure how this is humorous. This guy's life is now ruined over a non-violent offense. A conviction dubiously procured by police engaging in trickery and deceit.

The guy was engaging in illegal activity. The cops use deceit to capture a criminal. The fact that the criminal was so stupid is humorous.

It's beyond hillarious, it's monumentally dumb. This guy has to have the IQ of just above retard. And we need our law inforcement waisting tax payer dollars to catch a retard growing pot on side the road.

Priceless

Since he drove up in his car the cops can confiscate that. If he has a house and there's a spot somewhere to dry the product and bag it then they'll take that too. The cops see a net profit. :D

If we both agree the guy is near retarded, do we really want cops staking out retards to catch them in a victimless crime?

Or does florida have a lot of gansta's, robbers, murders, child molesters or rapist that need to be off the streets?

Again, I'm not against some guy smoking dope in his house, banging his consenting adult boyfriend up the ass or blowing his brains out with a gun; as long as it doesn't effect me or the society that I choose to live in. But government wants power over the people and making drugs illegal is just one way to increase that power.

Update ---

Col. Ramsay said the detectives never expected anything to come of it but ten minutes later their phone rang – it was the alleged grower, Mr. Locasio.

Locasio bargained the undercover detectives down to a price of $200 dollars for all six plants and arranged a meeting place, but when he handed the money to the cops, he got handcuffs instead of kind bud.

``He's got to win one of America's dumbest criminal awards,'' Col. Ramsay said."The plants were worth about $1,000 each. So he probably thought it was a good deal.''

A search warrant was then obtained for Locasio’s apartment. The search turned up 20 more marijuana plants, four pounds of freshly harvested marijuana and several 80 milligram Oxycontin pills, according to police. They also seized $1,380 in cash – suspected proceeds from drug sales.

Locasio and his wife, 50-year-old Christine Locasio, were both charged with cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and sale of marijuana, and booked into the county jail.

Probable cause?

That certainly isn't mentioned in any of the information that has been provided thus far. Further, unless a criminal act is actually witnessed, no probable cause may be ascertained. Sounds like an illegal search/seizure to me.

They already had the guy paying ransom for the pot plants, and therefore had probable cause to search his house. I'm not a lawyer but I thinks that's how it works.
