Diversity Makes Greatness
President Obama entered office smack at the onset of the Great Recession.
He skillfully navigated us through that very dangerous economic time, and we got past the scare of slipping into the depression that GWB warned of. President Obama's polling soared.
A few months later, by May 11th 2009, he was polling at 62.5% job approval. ( A level DT never even got CLOSE to in three years. )
President Obama was ready to get to work.
He had goals to pursue.
He wanted to tackle Health Care Reform.
His staff warned him that was very risky and could cause his poll numbers to fall.
He mused that it would be absurd to do nothing but take his poll numbers and shine it up and display it on a shelf. He saw that as political capital and he was determined to spend it.
He pushed forward with Health Care Reform, fully knowing that this was a hot topic with the potential for great criticism. He knew that Health Care was the 'third rail of politics.'
He wanted to do something lasting for America and he was willing to spend his popularity to get it.
After he took on Health Care, his polling went into wild seesaw gyrations, sinking as low as 40.1% at one point.
By election day 2012 he was at 50%. Nobody knew if he would prevail or not, but Health Care Reform had been achieved.
If he acted like DT, and made every decision based on reelection calculations (John Bolton) he would never have taken on Health Care Reform. He could have simply rode the improving economy to an easy win. But that wasn't his way. He had higher ideals than DT.
It sure shows now.
His most recent job approval polling had him at 57.2%
RCP
We saw what DT did about his own Health Care Reform promises. As soon as he found out it was not polling well, he dropped it like a hot potato.
Promise Broken.
DT, 2016:
"Obamacare. We're going to repeal it, we're going to replace it, get something great. Repeal it, replace it, get something great!"
"There's many different ways, by the way. Everybody's got to be covered. This is an un-Republican thing for me to say because a lot of times they say, 'No, no, the lower 25 percent that can't afford private'… I am going to take care of everybody. I don't care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody's going to be taken care of much better than they're taken care of now."
When asked how his health law would care for the uninsured, Mr. Trump said, "the government's gonna pay for it. But we're going to save so much money on the other side. But for the most it's going to be a private plan and people are going to be able to go out and negotiate great plans with lots of different competition with lots of competitors with great companies and they can have their doctors, they can have plans, they can have everything."
"Because the drug companies have an unbelievable lobby. And these guys that run for office, that are on my left and right and plenty of others, they're all taken care of by the drug companies. And they're never going to put out competitive bidding. So I said to myself wow, let me do some numbers. If we competitively bid, drugs in the United States, we can save as much as $300 billion a year."
