For years we have heard the right wing whiners cry about energy independence, and the need to drill for more oil. Either this year, or next year, the US will overtake Russia, and Saudi Arabia, as the number one producer of oil. So, why are we selling our oil on the global market, and why are we not "energy independent"? Why do the Repugnant deplorables continue to keep the US dependent on others for our energy?

Nothing new for me in that article. What you are saying is that rather then be energy independent as the Repugnant ones have claimed is the goal, it is better for the US to maintain its inability to refine light crude in favor of refining heavy crude, and thus maintaining the current status of energy dependence.

"So U.S. refiners spent billions of dollars installing fluid catalytic crackers (FCCs), cokers, and hydrotreaters that are needed to process heavy sour crudes. After investing all of that money into processing the heavy crudes, the economics of running Bakken or Eagle Ford crudes in a heavy oil refinery are far less appealing than running a heavy Canadian or Venezuelan crude.

Heavy oil refiners would rather simply continue to import oil more suited to their needs, while the light, sweet crudes coming out of the U.S. shale plays are often a better fit for certain foreign refineries. Or, logistically it may simply be easier for Canada, for instance, to import U.S. crude for their East Coast refineries, while they export their heavy oil from Alberta to U.S. refineries that are equipped to process it."


Certainly would not make sense to spend billions in developing refineries to refine the light crude, and thus gain energy independence. Certainly would not occur to the stupid.
 
Germany and Russia are natural trading partners. Nordstream2 is a direct pipeline.

being energy independent can just mean we have the capacity to provide all of our own energy if needed. We dont actually have to forego favorable trade terms until it becomes necessary. Since we can produce everything ourselves if needed this also lessens the power other countries have over us.

Problem with your illogical "reasoning" is we don't have the capacity to refine "sweet crude", and thus we are dependent on others to do so. All you are proving is that "energy independence" is a right wing lie used to allow big oil to destroy more pristine land, and pollute the waters.

If one wants to be independent one has to have the means by which to be so, right? Same as with anything else. Why do we sell 40% of our food overseas, especially China, when our people are going hungry? Why are corporations allowed to give our technological advances to China for the sake of cheap labor when our people cannot afford to pay rent? Common sense, which is highly lacking in this country, should tell a person something is wrong.
