Reagan Hurt America Badly By OK of Government Hatred

Government approval has dropped since Reagan infamously said:

"... government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem."

That was false and it hurt our nation badly. People stopped seeing government as the way our society and country is organized and run, and began seeing government as an enemy.

Gallup: Government approval nosedived after Reagan speech

We have never recovered from the damage Reagan did, and now Trump has made things far worse by refusing to concede his defeat in the 2020 election. This has compounded the damage that Reagan did, and added to it by eroding faith in our elections.

This has undermined the very core of our nation, our democracy.

Republicans are chipping away at the very foundation of our country. Do Republicans even WANT a United States of America?

Trump is by far the worst president we have ever had, and he followed a trend of bad Republican presidents who have damaged our country.

Nixon, Reagan, GWB, Trump resulted in America going downhill.

The right has glorified Reagan, but the other half of America strongly disapproved of Reagan.

And for good reason. Reagan hurt America badly by making it OK to hate our own government.

Reagan never actually said it was OK to hate our own government but that was the message the right took.

And they have run far and wide with it. Look at Trump. He made hating a lot of things (and people) OK.

Not Good !

Reagan spoke for 54 minutes and 40 seconds and all the right got out of it was four words.

'Government is the problem.'

Before that, people had more respect for government.

After that moment it was like it was OK to hate government.

That erosion of confidence in the very thing that ties us together as a nation. Our own government, as established by our Constitution, is what stands between the United States of America and anarchy similar to the January 6th capitol attackers.

did you get your american history classes from a cracker jack box??? The founding fathers had a HUGE and SERIOUS distrust of government. They knew they needed one, but it must be monitored and kept in check at all times. this was due to their experience with the monarchy...........

this whole illusion that leftists are trying to create of the founders loving their new government they created is the false narrative

Founders were mostly oligarchs--land owners--who wanted to protect their power from government.

They also had a huge distrust of corporations. They had them chartered. If they did something that hurt the people, the charter could be revoked.
What the founders believed is subject to interpretation. They knew a government was necessary. They tried to set one up. read the constitution. Read about the separation of powers.

what the founders believed is easily understood through all of their writings and debate minutes............

What Reagan did, more than anything else, is expose the terrifying stupidity of so much of our working class....

specifically, how easy it is to get them to vote DIRECTLY AGAINST THEIR OWN ECONOMIC BEST INTERESTS.

America is paying the price for its lack of commitment to good, actual knowledge-imparting education,
and that price will be the republic itself.

So you're a know nothing troll.

even if I copied and pasted the entire set of documents here, you wouldn't read them.......are you afraid of the truth?

trying to tell you what they meant would only start a debate about how you think i'm wrong, or that i'm not reading them correctly. I'm telling you to read them for yourself. YOU learn what they wanted.

government should be hated sometimes. so should corporations.

duelling extremisms is bad.

Hello Nordberg,

Yeah, I don't get this thing with the right that they are so trusting of corporations. To me, corporations are less trustworthy than the government. The government has to answer to we the people. A corporation only has to answer to it's own board, which is focused on profiteering.

We the people have no control over corporations but we do have control over our government. If we don't like it we can change it. We can even change our constitution if we want. The only control we have over corporations is we can direct our government to exert control over them, to regulate them. We do not regulate corporations strongly enough. And they have far too much influence over Congress.

We need to end the legalized corruption of our Congress.

The framers of the constitution did not teach hatred of government.

The entire reason they held the constitutional convention was because the confederation government was way to weak.

They saw weakness of government as the reason for even deliberating on a new constitution.

They wanted a stronger national government, but with limitations on it's coercive power.

1. I said they had serious DISTRUST, not hatred.
2. agreed
3. an extremely limited government because of their experience.
