You have to be realistic in an attempt to help. Stop to block the traffic, turn on your blinkers, call 911, remain in your vehicle. Getting out in the middle lanes of traffic is pretty much one of the most dangerous things you can do.
The reality is he likely would have been hit regardless, but if he remained in his vehicle with a seat belt on he wouldn't likely have died for his trouble.
