Rebranding Indentured Servitude: Trump’s Plan for Undocumented Farm Workers

鬼百合

Let It Burn!

Legal Status Now Comes with a Boss.

During a speech at the Iowa State Fair Grounds, Donald Trump explained his immigration plan for undocumented workers in agriculture:

Let the farmers vouch for them.

“They work very hard… they bend over all day… some farmers literally cry… If a farmer is willing to vouch, we’ll be good with it.”
He’s essentially describing a system where laborers remain undocumented, underpaid, and dependent on wealthy landowners to avoid deportation.

That's not immigration reform. That’s indentured servitude by proxy.

The 13th Amendment abolished slavery; except as punishment for a crime. But this? This is just recreating the power dynamic… minus the chains and with tears for cover.

TLDR: Trump suggests letting farmers “vouch” for undocumented workers to keep them from being deported. It ties legal status to employer approval, raising 13th Amendment and due process concerns.

This is absolutely true. Look at the result of his actions. Farm workers and mini hospitality. Staff are OK to stay as long as they stay in their jobs. But if their boss fires them or calls, INS, they are going to alligator Alcatraz.

In fact, if they quit their jobs, the boss can call INS and have them sent to alligator Alcatraz.

They are afraid to make a Worker’s Comp. claim, or complain about illegal dangerous conditions, or even complain if they’re not getting minimum wage.

So, what is the system currently in use...?

Cheap labor/capitalism.
Everything the OP describes is already possible and in use in some cases within the agriculture industry. Trump's suggested changes only quasi-legalize some of it. It is still cheap labor and capitalism for the business owners.

A better solution is forcing business owners to change their model. Make them automate more processes to eliminate the need for cheap labor. It's just laziness in many cases that is keeping owners from doing it. They have access to cheap labor so they don't bother to innovate. Think of it like the invention of the cotton gin and reaping machines prior to the Civil War. Southern agribusiness--aka plantations--didn't see any benefit to moving from slavery that they were invested heavily in to automating the process and eliminating manual slave labor.

No difference today. The best solution is mass arrests and deportations of illegals in agribusiness that forces owners to change how they do things eliminating the need for a cheap, illegal, labor force. YOU want to keep the status quo. YOU by way of my previous analogy are advocating for the retention of slavery.

Can they quit and go home? Slaves cannot do that. Go cry some more.
