Report: Abstinence Programs Don't Work

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Programs that focus exclusively on abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior, although they are eligible for tens of mil lions of dollars in federal grants, according to a study released by a nonpartisan group that seeks to reduce teen pregnancies.

"At present there does not exist any strong evidence that any abstinence program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence or reduces the number of sexual partners" among teenagers, the study concluded.

The report, which was based on a review of research into teenager sexual behavior, was being released Wednesday by the nonpartisan National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

The study found that while abstinence-only efforts appear to have little positive impact, more comprehensive sex education programs were having "positive outcomes" including teenagers "delaying the initiation of sex, reducing the frequency of sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use."

"Two-thirds of the 48 comprehensive programs that supported both abstinence and the use of condoms and contraceptives for sexually active teens had positive behavior effect," said the report.

No way! you mean telling a kid not to have sex cause it is bad mmmkay isn't working? Maybe they should add the part about going to hell and that will stop kids from having sex. Oh that's right we did that before and it didn't work either.

I saw that. Big surprise. This abstinence malarkey is a big deal here in West Texas. We also lead or nearly lead the nation in teenage pregnancies and teen STDs. Probably also in early teenage marriages.

As the article said, give kids the information and they'll use it wisely. Clearly it doesn't make a difference in their decision to engage in sex or not. Informed people make better decisions; why should that not also apply to teens?

OMGZ THIS IS SO SURPRISING!@!

By way of similar logic maybe they should tell kids not to ever ever ever do drugs; that would solve our drug problem no? Oh wait...

Teachers and pastors should tell kids to hit the streets, smoke blunts and fuck hoez; and to avoid studying and hard work at all cost.

That would make an interesting experiment.

The governments drug programs are a joke. Their abstinence programs are a bigger joke, but still.

They exagerate the negative effects of drugs beyond all reason... I'm like, hell, just tell the kids what they actually do, and the practical and real reasons society has to restrict some substances. Don't turn it into a morality tail. That'll be enough, and it won't make them laugh at the stupidity of what you're saying. "Drug education" programs, I think, do more to inflame their curiosity than anything else.

The US is a never-ending source of amusement and I'm not just talking Hollywood. What fuckwit would think absinence programmes for horny teenagers would ever work? Fucking idiot who thought that one up :clink:

the abstinance only program is just a way to placate certain voters and route money to their causes. ie buy votes.

Abstinance only programs are silly and unrealistic and only exist to placete idiots who feel bad because they never got any before they were married, so they want to convense themselves that it would have been a bad thing.

I think you are onto something there Alex.

And we can't advertise Condoms, that would promote promiscuity

Kinda like saying seat belts cause wrecks.

Look, If I was sure candy was bad for me when I was a kid, and then learned that candy eaten responsabily and in moderate amounts was not bad for me, but I was already to old for Halloween, I would be tempted to try to resist that information and fight to end Halloween for others, I would never do that, But I can see the temptation.

Thats a great analogy. We should not tell anyone about seatbelts because it will encourage them to drive recklessly.

Put this under the "No Shit Sherlock" files.
Teaching kids about contraception encourages them to have sex and teaching people to use seat belts when they drive encourages them to drive dangerously.

Sorry missed this whole part of the thread cause I tacked my quote on earlier without reading through. My bad.
