This is a perfect example of an ingrained thought pattern. Don Young heard the slur from his parents, they probably heard it from their parents, etc. To give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he didn't mean it in a derogatory fashion; however, he now consciously has to think before he speaks and change his vocabulary until these slips don't occur. Sometimes when you change the behaviour, the thinking follows, instead of the other way around.
