Republicans seek to open Grand Canyon watershed, for uranium exploration.

And I'm the one that jaded you.
They have an uphill battle to get the SCOTUS to do it. They upheld the Virginia ban on uranium mining like 20 years ago, so this is not something they don't have history with. I do take exception to you painting this as a republican thing. Certainly here in Virginia, a lot of conservatives and republicans have opposed removing the Uranium Moratorium over the years, especially those from the areas where the proposed sites are located. There are NIMBY republicans too.

By profession and temperament, I generally do not leap to premature conclusions.

Uranium is a loaded word that is automatically going to repel most people.

I do not rule out the efficacy of mining uranium under adequate safety restriction and based on good science and engineering.

I also believe, in principle, in affording the maximum level of environmental protection to National Parks, National Monuments, and adjacent lands.

I do not have enough information to leap to a conclusion, but I am pretty sure I do not trust mining companies to have the public interest first and foremost in their minds.

It's the republicans in Arizona pushing for this.

Uranium is plentiful. It is why people installed radon detectors several years ago. Not especially dangerous in a vacuum but there is a high risk over time due to biological magnification, particularly to water sheds from the mined tailings. Plus, the stigma is such that it could devastate economies with corporations not wanting to build anywhere near it.

just off the top of my head, if there is uranium in the Grand Canyon watershed, the radioactivity is already there.......

The Roberts court is the most pro corporations and wealthy of all time. Looking the wrong place to rescue the environment or public land.

This has been back, and forth, and they keep pushing for it. I hope enough people want to push back against this continued depravity. It was noted back in March: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/mar/10/grand-canyon-uranium-mining-ban-supreme-court

It still continues though, and the only thing you can do is tell them to fuck off en masse. Like this: https://sierra.secure.force.com/act...ook&utm_content=uranium_v2&utm_campaign=emacq

What do we need uranium for?

Distinction without a difference with the current corporate oligarchy controlling the government and public policy. I pray to God I live to see one day an honest, dyed in the wool civil libertarian on the SCOTUS. Just one isn't too much to ask for is it? Not a leftist who only believes in rights for minorities or a conservative who is only a selective strict constructionist but a crazy radical libertarian who will say both screw the police/government and "Hell yeah you have a right to be a complete asshole to everybody in the world who is offended by your beliefs" type.

Why.. Our uranium production is miniscule.. Why buy most of what we use from Khazakstan.

Saudi Arabia and Jordan also have uranium.. They don't have the Grand Canyon......

When they pump themselves dry, maybe the ground will collapse from under them and give them a grand canyon too.

The Tsangpo Canyon is grander than the grand canyon though so maybe we need to allow mining so we have the grandest grand canyon on the planet. #MAGA!!!

They don't really pump oil in Saudi Arabia.. ..and they don't use old rocker pumps.
