They did that after several Senators kindly got up and pointed out that "Holy shit people! This goes beyond the bitches! This shit is broad, they could deny coverage for our dick pills! Egads!' And so then the got a couple of more votes and it failed.
Now here is the purpose of the Blunt Amendment: To give every employer in the United states of America, the LEGALLY SANCTIONED right to deny any woman who works for them their birth control coverage. Now of course, health insurance is part of your compensation, which you receive in exchange for your labor. So the Blunt Amendment would take compensation from women, who already earn only 80 cents for every dollar men make.
Further, most Americans PAY part of their salary into their health benefits, because few employers these days cover it 100%. So that is further theft of a woman's earned dollar.
Here is the Republican party attempting to write into law, that when a woman goes to work for a company, that company may now legally pass a moral judgement on her and state that she is not entitled to birth control under her health insurance policy because HE disagrees with it. Oh yeah, that's the other thing. Who did you think were going to be making these decisions? "The company" cannot speak or think, or decide. So who? The CEO? The COO? Who? When you realize this, you also realize this actually legalizes a form of sexual harassment.
Now, these past two weeks what we have seen is a right wing narrative taking over. CNN"s Dana Loesch linked on her blog to this piece:

Now, I don't know if you have to be a woman to see the sexual terrorism being practiced here, but to a woman there can be no doubt: she's a slut, and she should be punished. This is an incredibly dangerous and hateful narrative but it has taken over the right wing right now. And while they have their clowns talking, and everyone says "oh they're just clowns", the Republican politicians are LEGISLATING these ideas into law, or attempting to. This is two pieces of one pie working in tandem.
