Huckabee Wanted to Isolate AIDS Patients

By ANDREW DeMILLO

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Mike Huckabee once advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, opposed increased federal funding in the search for a cure and said homosexuality could "pose a dangerous public health risk."

As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.

Huckabee said Saturday that his comments came at a time when "the AIDS crisis was just that _ a crisis. We didn't know exactly all the details of how extensive it was going to be. There was just a real panic in this country. If I were making those same comments today, I might make them a little differently."

In 1992, Huckabee wrote, "If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague."

HIV patients are NOT quarentined. YOu just make shit up huh? Anything to make a conservative that talks about isolating HIV patients who are not contagious, in the same way that someone with an airborne pathogen is, sound like they were making reasonable policy proposals.

Boy I can only imagine the gantlet of plays on Huckabee's name coming...

I hope he wins the nomination
he'd be the easiest to beat.:clink:

I think huckleberry is the GOP's strongest choice for a general election. I think wanting to quarantine AIDS patients, and denying biological evolution are ideas who's time has come.

Note he called AIDS a Plague....

Suggesting that it was sent from God to punish people?

I read abou this. Republicans are intentionally obtuse. In 1992 we knew how HIV and AIDS are transmitted.

Something can be a plague without being specifically from God, but at least you are reading into this what you want to--- damn that objective reason!

Definition if you needed proof of your ignorance:

plague (plural plagues)

1) A widespread affliction, calamity, or destructive influx especially when seen as divine retribution.
---A plague of locusts
2) (pathology) The disease "plague", caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and mostly known by its variant form bubonic plague.
3)(pathology) An epidemic or pandemic caused by any pestilence, but specifically by the disease "plague".

Notice that is says "especially", not "exclusively", and that definition 3 fits HIV pretty well (pandemic).

Oh we also have quotes available from Pat Roberston and other religious leaders.
Plenty of biggotry in religion. Actually it is one of their foundations.

Not only that, in 1992 we were WELL AWARE that this wasn't not just a disease in the gay community.
