Kennedy suggested that medical tracking apps can achieve the same results as many weight loss drugs such as Ozempic

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy JR. is making waves again with his latest outlandish suggestion that all Americans be fitted with a "wearable" health tracking device by 2029.

During his remarks to the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee on Tuesday, Kennedy promised to undergo "one of the biggest advertising campaigns in HHS history" to achieve his goal of wearable health tracking devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, such as Apple Watches, FitBit and Oura Rings, that track things like blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

Kennedy said these devices could help work toward his goal of "Making America Healthy Again."

"It's a way people can take control of their own health. They can take responsibility," he said. "They can see, as you know, what food is doing to their glucose levels, their heart rates and a number of other metrics as they eat it, and they can begin to make good judgments about their diet, about their physical activity, about the way that they live their lives."

Kennedy claimed he has friends who've "changed their lives" by wearing glucose monitors, helping them lose weight and freeing themselves from diabetes. Regarding getting every American these health devices, Kennedy said that his department was "exploring ways of making sure that those costs can be paid for."

He added that the blockbuster weight loss drug Ozempic costs more than $1,000 a month and claimed wearable fitness monitors can achieve the same end goals.

"If you can achieve the same thing with an $80 wearable, it's a lot better for the American people," he said.

Despite Kennedy's claims that this is a well-intentioned initiative, critics have raised concerns about the prospect of having every American fitted with any kind of tracking device. Health data gathered by these devices is often stored in the cloud and could be sold to companies, advertisers, or researchers without the users' consent, according to the Brown University Center for Digital Health.

The vast data collection also raises concerns about data theft in breaches, which can lead to identity theft.

While many medical professionals have promoted the benefits of having a wearable health monitoring device, some have raised concerns that the devices may lead to medical anxiety, self-diagnosis, and self-medicating.
