Roald Dahl’s famed children’s books are being scrubbed by so-called sensitivity experts to remove language they deem offensive, including “fat” or “ugly” characters — and making the beloved Oompa Loompas of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” gender neutral.

Publisher Puffin tapped sensitivity readers to rewrite hundreds of sections of the late author’s texts to ensure his work can continue to be enjoyed — and not offend — today’s more woke audience, The Telegraph reported.

“Words matter,” begins the notice at the bottom of the copyright page of Puffin’s latest editions of Roald Dahl’s books.

Ugh...

This is a bit like banning To Kill a Mockingbird because it had racism in it. I had a full set of his books, well I still do, somewhere on my shelves as I never give books away... I enjoyed them.

I remember when Americans almost to the person agreed that chopping the nasty bits off of statues was wrong barbaric and stupid but this is essentially the same thing.

Ya but so often in history people have said "I dont recognize this country" at the end of life because it had changed so much. The real issue for me is that the change during my lifetime has been in the main for the worse.

Yes in my lifetime it has turned decidedly negative. I would never live in my hometown today it's a shithole now.

Same with Rockford Il, which has been in decline ever since the late 50's when Dutch Elm disease gutted their spirit.
 
The Dahl estate was bought by Netflix - they own all the books and films having paid $500 million for the entire catalogue. Utter madness to change anything. Give choice not regulation.
 
If you wrote a book years ago that by today's standards is not appropriate, you would think about making changes. It is no big deal. Dr. Seuss's family decided to not print the ones their father wrote back in different times. They are insulting or disparaging to groups of people. Some people do not want to do that. Rightys get their hackles up because they run around angry. You have a name for it that you do not understand, woke. It just means you are aware that discrimination exists in daily life and in institutions. It does.

It is still weird to rewrite an author's book. Even with permission from those owning the rights.

The white share of the U.S. population has been dropping, from a little under 90% in 1950 to 60% in 2018. It will likely drop below 50% in another 25 years.

White nationalists want America to be white again. But this will never happen. America is on its way to becoming predominantly nonwhite.
