saying its values are 'hard to find these days'

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates rebuked the Republican Party, saying none of the eight presidents he served would recognize it today.

"I worked for eight presidents, five of them were Republicans. I don't think any of them would recognize the Republican Party today," Gates, a Republican, told CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

"The values and the principles that the Republican Party stood for under those five presidents are hard to find these days," he told host John Dickerson.

Gates also said the Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 election was rigged "gives an opportunity to America's enemies to say America is a declining power."

Agreed with Gates; there is no Republican party except in name only. Conservative values have been replaced with Trump values.

IMO, the Republicans are effectively handing the Democrats the reins of power for the next 6 years.

Need a 2 party system or more, the days of Reagan and Tip" O'Neill

Trump owns the party. It is now the Trump Party. When he fades away into ignominy, the reds will battle for a new king to lead them. They like authoritarianism.

The GOP has massively reformed.

This is a good thing, I might even start calling myself a Republican again.

Trump is wonder...he is one of the most important political figures in all of Americas history.

Calling what happened to the Republican party a massive reform is like calling what happened on 9/11 "redecorating". While it's technically true, it completely overlooks the massive destruction involved.

What stopped you from calling yourself a Republican- IF YOU DON'T MIND ANSWERING AN INTELLIGENT QUESTION?

As I have said many times I am a Leftist, a progressive, a socialist.....I am not by any stretch of imagination a conservative. Now that Republicans are the party of the people and of liberals battling the illiberal deeply abusive Regressive Left I might become a Republican again.....I am looking for the legacy R's to be thrown out of Washington first.

I will again if they come up with a well spoken , polished individual who, like Trump, is anti-PC and most certainly anti-woke. Trump was just a poor messenger.
But you are correct. The GOP has reformed. Hopefully the Bushes and McCains are relics now.
And I too am a liberal.
