Ron DeSantis stripped more than $32m in arts and culture funding from Florida’s state budget over his hatred of a popular fringe festival that he accused of being “a sexual event”, critics of the rightwing governor say.

DeSantis justified his unprecedented, wide-ranging veto of grants to almost 700 groups and organizations by saying it was “inappropriate” for $7,369 of state money to be allocated to Tampa fringe, a 10-day festival that took place earlier this month with a strong message of inclusivity, and its sister event in Orlando.

I can’t imagine a world without art! This is another black eye for Florida. These festivals generate income for people snd tax revenue as well! Horrible decision

Florida has always been a cultural wasteland. Though some art institutions and museums have opened there. I bet they are rethinking Florida as a new art mecca.

If art is good the government does not need to force people to fun it.

The wealthy see that money as theirs. They do not want national healthcare, because they do not need it. They do not want public education, because they do not use it. They do not want min wage because it might cost them money. They are very greedy and never have enough.

Yes. Why oligarchies are major causes of a nation's decline.

Perhaps hunter biden can head to Florida and become the next Bob Ross.

GREAT news. There are other more pressing matters.

If that makes it easier for Florida to meet its budget and keeps taxes low, hooray for Florida! Arts and cultural funding are a luxury, not a necessity. Just because some festival is popular doesn't mean the government should be financing it. If it's that popular, let it finance itself selling tickets to participants and charging a fee for vendors and groups providing content.

Do Republicans even go to art museums?
