Western security officials on Friday hinted that Russian forces might be experiencing some complications since the country invaded Ukraine earlier this week, even as reports of explosions and fighting continue going into the third day of open conflict.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said on Friday that U.S. officials’ understanding is that Russian troops have “experienced some setbacks” in Ukraine.

“We certainly have seen indications that the Russians are not, in every case, making the progress that they thought they were going to make,” Kirby told reporters.

Separately, British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace was quoted by Reuters as saying the “Russian army has failed to deliver, on Day One, its main objective.” He added that Russia had lost some 450 personnel in just about a day of fighting.

Russia is meeting "greater resistance" from the Ukrainians than they might have expected, a senior U.S. defense official told NBC News on Friday. "They are fighting for their country," the official said, referring to Ukrainian troops and freedom fighters.

Two days in, the Russian offensive appeared to be stymied by stiffer-than-expected resistance from highly motivated Ukrainian armed forces.

Despite an overwhelming advantage in manpower and equipment, the Russian advance lost some of its momentum Friday and the quick victory Russian President Vladimir Putin was counting on is no longer assured, a senior United States defense official told NBC News.

"We do assess that there is greater resistance by the Ukrainians than the Russians expected," the official said. “They are fighting for their country.”

It is a territorial imperative. People and animals fight harder the closer to their homes the battle gets. They can no longer run. They fight to protect their homelands and families. I suppose we should have learned that lesson as we attacked countries with no airforce, no navy, and far weaker weapons...and lost. The attacking soldiers do not even know why they are there. They follow orders, but not with the same drive. They begin to fight for each other since they are not fighting for a believable cause. They count down the days until they can go home.
