"The names of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and other prominent figures including California Senator Dianne Feinstein will be removed from 44 San Francisco public schools, a move that stirred debate Wednesday on whether the famously liberal city has taken the national reckoning on America's racist past too far.

In addition to Mr. Washington and Thomas Jefferson — former presidents who owned slaves — the list includes naturalist John Muir, Spanish priest Junipero Serra, American Revolution patriot Paul Revere and Francis Scott Key, composer of the "Star Spangled Banner."'

Maybe we need a moratorium on historical figures and honoring the past.

Wait, what!?
Diane Feinstein is taken down too!?
Lo!ok My goodness everything White must go.

Naming schools after national figures is much, much less common here in the northeast.
They tend to name them after local people like WWI and II military heroes, former mayors and congressmen, and bishops and cardinals.
Tom Brady would certainly have had a new school named after him had he not chosen to end his career in Ron DeSantis' insane asylum of a state.
That wouldn't be common. Ted Williams, Bobby Orr, Bill Russell, and Rocky Marciano don't have schools, but I think Brady would have gotten one.

The school names never get changed; they remain until the schools are eventually razed.

In any case, local schools are a local matter. When I go to San Francisco or any other city that I like, I don't notice the names of the schools.

Dems are still mad about getting smacked down by Lincoln.

"The committee that selected the names included Feinstein on the list because as mayor in 1984 she replaced a vandalized Confederate flag that was part of a long-standing flag display in front of City Hall."

:dunno:

It was the flag of the DEMOCRAT-dominated insurrectionists, after all.

Florida is handling COVID better than Massachusetts, FYI.

What I find most interesting is there is actually a backlash among progressives in SF over this. Was kind of shocked to see. The biggest thing is we're in the middle of COVID, schools have been closed for close to a year and not expected to open soon and this is what the school board is worried about. You combine that with a huge discrepancy in reading and math proficiency numbers between black and white students along with the data that poorer kids are falling further behind the longer they are out of the classroom and it's no bueno. Not to mention we're already a City with, on a percentage basis, a very small number of families compared to other big cities and this is making more families consider leaving the City or going to private school.

But somehow changing the names of schools is going to be the impetus to reverse all this? As we're seeing, many people aren't buying it.

Yeah, that was a pretty shitty thing for her to have done. Probably sour grapes, like those displayed toward her when she was caught on camera being cordial with Lindsey Graham. I recall it was immediately after they hugged on C-SPAN that the movement to drop her name began.
