Science says liberals, not conservatives, are psychotic

A political-science journal that published an oft-cited study claiming conservatives were more likely to show traits associated with “psychoticism” now says it got it wrong. Very wrong.

The American Journal of Political Science published a correction this year saying that the 2012 paper has “an error” — and that liberal political beliefs, not conservative ones, are actually linked to psychoticism.

“The interpretation of the coding of the political attitude items in the descriptive and preliminary analyses portion of the manuscript was exactly reversed,” the journal said in the startling correction.

Another idiot that thinks “Political Science” is science. What a fucking moron.

Here are some real scientific papers dealing with the differences.

Liberal brains have more activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, associated with certain higher-level functions, such as attention allocation, reward anticipation, decision-making, ethics and morality, impulse control (e.g. performance monitoring and error detection), and emotion.

Conservatives were found to have an enlarged amygdala and greater activity in that region. The amygdala is the fear center.

“The liberal party is generally more intellectual and the conservative party is more anti-intellectual.”

Another ass kicking for the trolling groaner. :rofl2:

LOL! I love these lead-to-nowhere threads where the goofy OP tries to make him or herself seem superior to everyone else.

Trollin, trollin, trollin! Get those trolls a-trollin, RAWHIDE!!

If only the people posting something like this, could see how desperate, and stupid they sound. I love seeing the gullible get all giddy over stuff like this. If you are trying to troll with it, you're pretty damn late. All it does is provide a few laughs at the OP's expense.

Psychology is no more science than is political science. They both rely on the same statistical techniques.

Using "self-reported" political attitudes is not particularly reliable.

NIH, bud. Monitored actual brain activity. Other studies corroborate it.

Here is the meat of the paper. The OP's conclusion is incomplete, inaccurate, and false.

The journal said the error doesn’t change the main conclusions of the paper, which found that “personality traits do not cause people to develop political attitudes.”

But professor Steven Ludeke of the University of Southern Denmark, who pointed out the errors, told Retraction Watch that they “matter quite a lot.”

“The erroneous results represented some of the larger correlations between personality and politics ever reported; they were reported and interpreted, repeatedly, in the wrong direction,” he said.

The MRI part may be somewhat scientific but the interpretation the researchers give to those results makes it much more subjective.
Political science studies have used the MRI--does that make it equally scientific?

Any studies that purport to show more negative or positive biological traits based on political opinions is questionable. The fact that you are willing to believe they found negative stuff about conservatives and the conservative posters were willing to believe negative findings about liberals illustrate our partisanship rather than our scientific evaluations determined our conclusions.

I remember when this study was originally reported and the liberals believed it. Then, the journal reported the results were reversed and all the conservatives believed it.

The functions of the amygdala and of the anterior cingulate cortex are well known.

The conclusions of those studies are born out even on this forum, much less correlated with the findings in the Business Insider article.

Your observations about posters on an internet forum are about as unscientific as you can get; especially since other posters will claim those (negative) characteristics apply to liberals.

Brain functions may be well known, but it is a big jump to relate those to political attitudes. And, they used "self-reported" political attitudes. Previous studies tell us that how people label themselves does not necessarily correlate with their actual political views. Also, people tend to label themselves more middle-of-the-road so as not to distinguish themselves from others.

A recognized issue in psychological research is the fact that since social science faculty tend to be liberal they are more likely to do research on conservatives.

I think the main conclusions of the study are the most significant: “personality traits do not cause people to develop political attitudes.”

We have long known children tend to adopt the same party affiliation as parents and biological and personality traits are less a factor. Studies of identical twins raised separately tell us a lot about the influence of biological vs environmental factors.

I didn’t do the research. I didn’t write the papers. Talk to NIH if you disagree.

I don't disagree with their conclusion that “personality traits do not cause people to develop political attitudes.”

I dislike using academic research to try to denigrate liberals or conservatives based on biological or personality factors. It just furthers hostility and hate and creates phony bigoted stereotypes.
